Asia Grace brought #HipNJ to Newark, NJ during a toy-distribution holiday event, which was organized by the city’s Police and Fire Departments.
Throughout the day, police officers and firefighters helped Santa Claus hand out new toys. Many of those in attendance were families with young children, and many of those families were going through hard times.
“Either their house was, you know, destroyed by fire or a loved one was injured, killed,” Anthony F. Ambrose, the director of Public Safety, said. “So, it’s important that we bring them together and make sure that they have a Merry Christmas or a Happy Holiday.”
Angel, a Newark resident, is grateful that the departments were able to organize an event to help children like her young son, Devon, enjoy the holiday season.
“Just to see him happy makes my day. Like, it touches my heart a lot,” Angel said. “I appreciate the Police Department – the Fire Department – for really helping out because I just wanted him to enjoy his Christmas.”
Officer Eley, who’s with Newark’s 1st Precinct, sees this event as a reminder that the police will be there for both the good times and the bad times.
Mayor Ras Baraka wished all in attendance a Happy Holiday. He hopes that 2020 will be a better year for those who went through hard times in 2019. What an incredible way for the Newark Police and Fire department to give back during holidays.
